Introduction to Reciting with Maqamat

$399.00
Sold Out

This is an 8-week, beginner-level course for students that are interested in learning how to recite the Quran using maqamat. We will cover the following 4 maqams: Rast, Nahawand, Bayat, and Hijaz.

Special attention will be paid to:

  • learning the full scale of each maqam and understanding precisely which notes are unique to a given maqam and which are shared with other maqams

  • alternating between maqams so that, by the end of the course, students are confident reciting in any of these four maqams at will.

  • listening to a variety of recitations, adhans, and songs so that students can confidently identify the essential nature of each maqam and distinguish it from tone, melody, etc.

  • Understanding that the maqam is not a fixed melody, but a framework within which a trained vocalist learns to exercise his own creative license.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic proficiency in tajwid

Schedule & Location

  • Class meets Sundays from 2PM-3PM EST via Zoom. Attendance and participation is required.

  • Classes begin on December 14th and will end on February 1st.

  • This class is for boys and men, ages 10+.
