This is an 8-week, beginner-level course for students that are interested in learning how to recite the Quran using maqamat. We will cover the following 4 maqams: Rast, Nahawand, Bayat, and Hijaz.
Special attention will be paid to:
learning the full scale of each maqam and understanding precisely which notes are unique to a given maqam and which are shared with other maqams
alternating between maqams so that, by the end of the course, students are confident reciting in any of these four maqams at will.
listening to a variety of recitations, adhans, and songs so that students can confidently identify the essential nature of each maqam and distinguish it from tone, melody, etc.
Understanding that the maqam is not a fixed melody, but a framework within which a trained vocalist learns to exercise his own creative license.
Prerequisites:
Basic proficiency in tajwid
