This is an 8-week, intermediate-level course for students that already have basic proficiency using the 8 fundamental maqams: Rast, Nahawand, Bayat, Hijaz, Saba, Kurd, Sika, and Ajam.
Students will learn the following
the complete ascending and descending scales of Bayat
the defining characteristics of Bayat such as its ab’ad, istiqrar, ghammaz, and sayr
the difference between jins Bayat and maqam Bayat and understand the how ajnas are used to construct maqams and transition between them
how to seamlessly transition between Bayat and the other 7 maqams.
the most important derivative maqams in the Bayat family: Husayni, Shuri, and Nawa
Prerequisites:
Basic proficiency in using and recognizing the 8 fundamental maqams.
Basic proficiency in tajwid.
Schedule & Location
This class will meet online on Sundays from 10:45-11:45 AM EST. Classes begin on December 28, 2025 and end on February 22, 2025. Attendance and participation is required. Class will not meet on February 8.
In addition to the class meetings, students will have the opportunity to ask questions and request feedback during the week.
Class Size
The class size is limited to 3 students to guarantee sufficient time for applying and practicing the material covered.
