This is an 16-week, intermediate-level course for students that already have basic proficiency using the 8 fundamental maqams: Rast, Nahawand, Bayat, Hijaz, Saba, Kurd, Sika, and Ajam.
Students will learn the following
the complete ascending and descending scales of Bayat and Sika
the defining characteristics of each maqam such as its ab’ad, istiqrar, ghammaz, and sayr
the difference between jins and maqam and understand the how ajnas are used to construct maqams and transition between them
how to seamlessly transition between these two maqams and the other 5 maqams in Quran and poetry
the most important derivative maqams (furū’) in the Bayat and Sika families: Husayni, Shuri, Nawa, Muhayyar, ‘Iraq, Huzam, etc.
Prerequisites:
Basic proficiency in using and recognizing the 8 fundamental maqams.
Basic proficiency in tajwid.
Schedule & Location
This class will meet online on Sundays from 2PM-3PM EST.
Classes begin on August 23, 2026 and end on Dec 20, 2026.
We will not meet on September 13 or November 29.
This class is for boys and men, ages 10+.
Attendance and participation is required.
In addition to the class meetings, students will be given access to a course page where they will have the opportunity to ask questions and request feedback during the week.
Class Size
The class size is limited to 4 students to guarantee sufficient time for applying and practicing the material covered.
