Reciting with Maqamat: Rast & its Corollaries

This is an 8-week, intermediate-level course for students that already have basic proficiency using the following maqams in Quran recitation: Rast, Bayat, Hijaz, and Sika. Students will learn:

  • why Rast is considered the foundation of all maqams (umm al-maqamat)

  • the difference between jins and maqam and understand the how ajnas are used to construct maqams and transition between them

  • the defining characteristics of a maqam, such as istiqrar, ghammaz, sayr, etc.

  • the difference between the ascending and descending scales of Rast

  • how to seamlessly transition between Rast, Bayat, Hijaz, and Sika

  • the two most important derivative maqams in the Rast family: Suznak and Nayruz.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic proficiency in using and recognizing Rast, Bayat, Hijaz and Sika.

  • Basic proficiency in tajwid

Schedule & Location

This class will meet online on Sundays from 2:00-3:00 PM EST. Classes begin on June 7, 2026 and end on July 26, 2026.

In addition to the class meetings, students will be given access to a course page where they will have the opportunity to ask questions and request feedback during the week.

Class Size

The class size is limited to 3 students to guarantee sufficient time for applying and practicing the material covered.

Refund Policy

Refunds will not be provided for missed classes. Instead, a recording of the missed class will be shared.
