
Maqamat Theory and Application: Rast & its Corollaries
NOTE: This class began on October 4th. Seven more sessions remain.
This is an 8-week, intermediate-level course for students that already have basic proficiency using the following maqams in Quran recitation: Rast, Bayat, Hijaz, and Sika. Students will learn:
why Rast is considered the foundation of all maqams (umm al-maqamat)
the difference between jins and maqam and understand the how ajnas are used to construct maqams and transition between them
the defining characteristics of a maqam, such as istiqrar, ghammaz, sayr, etc.
the difference between the ascending and descending scales of Rast
how to seamlessly transition between Rast, Bayat, Hijaz, and Sika
the two most important derivative maqams in the Rast family: Suznak and Nayruz.
Prerequisites:
Basic proficiency in using and recognizing Rast, Bayat, Hijaz and Sika.
Basic proficiency in tajwid
Schedule & Location
This class will meet online on Saturdays from 4:15-5:15 PM EST. Classes begin on October 4, 2025 and end on November 22, 2025. Attendance and participation is required. All sessions are live and will not be recorded.
In addition to the class meetings, students will have the opportunity to ask questions and request feedback during the week via Telegram.
Class Size
The class size is limited to 3 students to guarantee sufficient time for applying and practicing the material covered.
