NOTE: Payment can be made in 2 installments. See below for details.
This is a 8-week in-person course that aims to teach students how to play the daff, or frame drum. Students will learn:
the correct way to hold and strike the daff
the four sounds a daff can make
and how to identify the pulse of a song and use that to determine the correct beat for that song
Students will also learn at least 8 beats and their time signatures and get ample time in each class to practice applying them to different songs. In addition to the 2/4 and 4/4 beats that most beginners learn, we will also spend significant time learning and practicing the often neglected 3/4, 6/8, and 10/8 beats. For each beat, students will learn the basic skeleton and also practice accenting the beat with various embellishments.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites required.
Schedule & Location
This class will meet online on Mondays from 8:00-9:00PM EST.
Classes will begin on November 9, 2026 and end on December 28, 2026.
This class is for men and boys 10+.
In addition to the class meetings, students will be given access to a course page, where the instructor will post additional resources.
Materials
Students are expected to bring a notebook, pencil, and drum to each class. I recommend getting a 10-14” duff. Here is a link to a good beginner-friendly drum.
Class Size
Class size is limited to 4 students to ensure adequate time for practice and feedback.
Refund Policy
Refunds will not be provided for missed classes. Instead, an audio recording of the missed class will be shared.
